There are different types of factors that insurers use to determine potential risk associated with one鈥檚 coverage. However, among those factors, there are certain factors that are beyond one鈥檚 control, whereas there are many factors which can be controlled by one who is seeking the coverage. This way, by positively influencing such factors, one can reduce the cost of coverage and hence can also enhance the chance of finding and increase savings. Few of such important factors have been given below:

Collision and Comprehensive Deductibles: This type of protection is optional and is not required by laws but can be quite beneficial. Individuals can save a significant amount by suitably choosing deductibles. For example, higher deductibles can reduce premiums significantly. On the other hand, eliminating collision and comprehensive options for older cars can save several dollars. However, by choosing higher deductibles, one will have to pay more out of pocket, if they were to file a claim. Therefore, one needs to decide the amount that they can afford. Also, choosing collision and comprehensive for older cars may create a situation where the individual will not receive the compensation they may think is reasonable. This is due to the fact that in case of a claim, the maximum one can get is the fair market value of minus the amount of the deductible they have chosen.

Auto-Related Health Insurance Option: One can save several dollars by choosing one鈥檚 health care insurance provider as primary in the case of accident-related injuries.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Deductible and Limits: These policies usually have a deductible of $250 and a PIP limit of $250,000. Individuals can save through a reduced premium by choosing a higher deductible and/or choosing one of the lower PIP limits of $15,000, $50,000, $75,000 or $150,000. They should keep in mind that their compensation will not exceed the limit that they have chosen

Lawsuit Option: Choosing the limited rights to sue option can save significantly. However, though limited law suit option saves money, it also limits one鈥檚 rights to sue for pain and suffering except in cases of death or permanent injury.

Discounts: There are several categories of discounts almost always available with providers. There it is always a good idea to ask your agent/broker/ insurer for discounts.
