Temporary auto insurance is an insurance policy that doesn't last for a full year like a standard car insurance policy typically would. Temporary auto insurance costs more than standard auto insurance policies, and it is something that isn't purchased that often when compared to annual auto insurance. When it is bought, usually the buyer displays some kind of extenuating circumstance that is warranting the purchase of such a short-term policy.

There are many reasons a person would want to buy a temporary auto insurance policy. Sometimes an individual doesn't have insurance when they first purchase a vehicle. In order to drive an automobile off the lot, you must have car insurance, and the majority of dealerships won't let you drive you car home if you don't have a policy that is up to date. Many times a person doesn't know exactly what kind of car insurance policy they want to buy when they are put in this sort of situation, and this is where a temporary auto insurance policy can really step in to provide some coverage for the time being. The temporary policy can be bought for a time frame that can last anywhere from a few weeks, to ten or eleven months, and this can give the driver a good chance to think about what kind of standard insurance policy they'll need.

Another situation that may warrant the purchase of insurance is when a person knows they will not be driving a car for a full year. When this is the case, the person can buy a temporary policy in order to keep the vehicle on the road, and to avoid paying for a full year's policy.

Yet another situation that may be right for the purchase of temporary auto insurance could be when a person is going to be moving, and they know they'll need insurance for either the time until they move, or immediately when they arrive to their new home. Moving can be a stressful situation in and of itself, and sometimes people have difficulty performing the necessary research that is required to find a good plan right when they arrive at their new home. A temporary insurance policy can easily come to the rescue for these people, and it is something to seriously consider if you are ever in such a situation.
