If you sign the application and the policy is in your name, since it has to match the ownership, then he can list himself as the principle operator ..
or you can just add him to your policy and if there are 2 cars, you'll get the multi vehicle discount.
We just switched from Scottish & York to CAA Insurance, and yet again, CAA didn't ask for proof of ownership. Neither did S&Y way back when.
Both cars are registered to my dad, but for all they know one could be registered to me, they didn't ask for anything.
way back when companies didn't ask for them ...they do now to show proof of ownership and proof that the vehicle on their policy is registered to the person on the application..maybe if you have to get a vehicle inspection, they'll notice ...could present a huge issue if there ever were a claim....
I should also point out that when you were filling in the auto application with your new company, under section #3 it clearly asks "is the applicant both the Registered Owner and the Actual Owner of the described automobile(s)? If you checked "yes" and your dad is the registered/actual owner , then you just misrepresented yourself and pretty much any claim would be denied. You would have a copy of this application as the Broker has to give you a copy - better double check what you put in that box.
