Dental bills put together can cause shame to the other medicine bills sometimes. Dentistry as a profession and as an industry has seen serious upheaval in the last 10 years. There are new techniques invented and sophisticated machines designed to operate on teeth that can cost you a bomb. As a result the costs of the insurance premium have risen too.

If you are looking to buy a dental insurance plan and are seeking some sort of a buyer's guide, this should be fine. This should help you most if you are a self-employed individual or do not have an employer provided dental insurance.

If you have researched the market to buy a dental insurance, you would have found that there are primarily two types of dental insurance. These two common types of insurance plans are DHMO and Indemnity Plans.

DHMO is also known as Dental Health Maintenance Organization and plans from DHMO are highly affordable. However, there is a downside to taking out a DHMO plan. DHMO plans have a group of dentists partnering with them and if you buy a dental assurance from them you are required to use the services of one of the participating dentists only.

Although this seems very rigid, DHMO plans have very low waiting periods so they are able to find you a dentist pretty quickly if you are in need.

On the other hand, Indemnity plan is tad expensive but lets you choose your own dentist. As compared to DHMO, it has longer waiting period for getting a dental procedure but it is justified when you find the dentist that you want to work with.

It is upto you to buy a dental assurance and with the advantages and disadvantages of the major plans discussed you should feel more equipped to do it. DHMO or Indemnity plan are for people with different needs in dental insurance.
