Applying for disability benefits can be very overwhelming for some people, especially those that are disabled and have often have severe medical issues to deal with. It's almost more than they can handle but they realize that they must do something in order to obtain the funds they need just to survive. The way to do this is to seek assistance from the Social Security Administration (SSA) by being approved for disability benefits.

If you are an adult, the first step in the process is to complete the necessary paperwork (application for Social Security Benefits and an Adult Disability Report). The disability report asks important questions in an attempt to find out just what your disabling condition is. You will be asked to provide information substantiating why you no longer can continue to work. This detailed report can be completed online or you can contact your local Social Security office for additional assistance.

The most important thing to do when you first apply is to carefully review the Adult Disability Starter Kit which is available from the SSA. In the kit, you will find worksheets that will assist you in evaluating the extent of your disability and offer tips on where to get all of the information you will need before applying. Once this is done, you are ready to apply - either online or with help from the SSA. First, complete the application and then fill out the Adult Disability Report. At the end of the report, you will need to give your permission for your doctor to supply the SSA with specific information about your disability. Remember, your claim cannot be approved without a full explanation of your disabling condition.

If you are applying for disability benefits online, you don't have to complete the entire application during one sitting. You can return to it later by using the confirmation number you were assigned when you first logged on. If you have any questions along the way, you can get in touch with the SSA by dialing its toll-free number 1-800-772-1213. Deaf or hard-of- hearing applicants can dial 1-800-325-0778.
