Home Insurance - Preparing For Flood And Its Aftermath

Flood insurance can be gotten from NFIP; not only do they provide flood insurance they have given the following tips to help you prepare for flood. These are what they advise that you do before and after a flood:

1.When you get warning of flood, do the following:-

昅ake sure your furniture is moved to the higher level of your home

昐tore your documents and irreplaceable objects in a place where they'll be safe and dry

旹nsure that you have pictures and/or videos of your valuables and that you keep them in a safe place that they would not get damaged. You'll need them when you file your claim.

旹nsure that your sump pump is in good working order.

旼et a sump pump with back-up power.

Clear the dirt and rubbish from gutters and downspouts.

旾f you have fuel tanks in your home, make sure you secure it properly so that it would not be swept off by the flood water because if this happens, it can cause damage to other houses.

旴ring in a competent and licensed electrician to raise your electrical components (switches, circuit breakers, sockets, wiring) above the projected flood level of your home.

2.During a flood, keep calm and do the following:-

Fill every available container with water incase water becomes contaminated during the flood.

Stay close to a battery operated radio so that you can get updates on the flood

If you are told to evacuate your home please do so immediately.

If you are instructed to switch off utilities from the main power source, please comply.

Avoid walking through flood water, a little depth of 6 inches can sweep you off your feet.

Stay away from fallen power lines and electrical wires. Electric current goes through water easily.

3.After the flood, here are some of what to do:-

If your home was damaged during the flood, call your insurance agent immediately.

If you have to move out of your home, make sure you are reachable.

Keep power off until your electrician comes and inspects your home for safety.

Same thing goes for the plumbing. Ensure that there is no sewage and line damage before use.

Ensure that the structure of your home is intact before going back into the house. If there is any possibility of a collapse please keep off from the house.

Keep all your damaged property outside so that an adjuster can know the things that were affected by the flood.

Throw away food that came in contact with flood water (including canned goods) they may have been contaminated.
