Typical Home Insurance Premiums

The typical home insurance premiums vary from state to state. The most recent statistics show that the average policy in the United States cost $809 but that number varied from a high of $1408 in Texas to a low of $628 in South Dakota.

The reason there is such a disparity in what the typical home insurance premiums cost in different locales is that states require different kinds of coverage from the companies who sell policies there.

For instance, in Texas, the state requires that the companies cover wind and hail damage. As Texas has a lot of damage in this regard, the policies are naturally going to cost more.

Some states have lower premiums but have exclusions for certain kinds of disasters. For instance, in California you need a separate policy for earthquake damage and in Florida, you need hurricane insurance if you get caught in one of the frequent violent storms there.

No basic policy covers floods. You can ask your company to add a rider for that or sign up with the federal government's National Flood Insurance program.

If you are worried about the high cost of your own home insurance rates, you can do one or more of the following:

Raise the deductible of your policy
Combine homeowner's and auto insurance policies
Don't buy coverage you don't need
Keep your coverage up to date
Avoid risks insurer's shun (don't get a pit bull or a trampoline for instance)
Improve your credit score as your policy premium can be affected by your credit worthiness
Shop around

So, that is what you need to know about typical home insurance premiums.
