Speaking from experience, there is no single American should be without life insurance. There are things your parents say with certainty that grow while. I wish all parents explaining the importance of obtaining life insurance for their children when they are old enough to understand.
I had a very dear friend of mine from high school lose her father suddenly in a car accident. He was in the hospital for several days before he was pronounced dead. From that moment on the livelihood of the entire family would change for ever. The first issue began as early as making the funeral arrangements. We found out quickly there no insurance in place. Everything, including the burial had to be paid for by the family. We were calling family and friends statewide to assist with costs to complete the burial.
After that massive confusion, came the survival of the rest of the family. My friend quickly realized she had to cut back to part time on the college courses she was taking in order to pick up a job to help her mother keep the bills paid. Her mother was a stay at home mom of her 2 younger brothers and she really had no job experience, however with no life insurance in place to help take care of them she found herself trying to get work as well.
There was not only a mortgage, car payment, electricity bills and groceries; but there were also credit cards and amenities that still needed to be paid. See, we all wondered why her dad had not planned to protect his family from a financial disaster in the event of his death. If he had, all this would have been taken care of and the family would have been able to grieve properly.
From living through this experience with her and seeing the stress and pain it caused I have made certain I carry insurance on myself so my son will never have to experience what we did several years ago.
The family is now doing well enough I suppose. My friend works full time and still is in her courses that she should have finished a year and a half ago. The two boys are doing well now and have become well rounded. However, it has taken years to level out, when if there was a simple life insurance policy in place it would not have been as terribly upsetting for all involved.
