Medical billing and coding is a great field to get into. All healthcare providers and physicians depend on their medical billers to get reimbursed for the services they provide to their patients. In a way, medical biller and coders help physicians with their livelihood. Though medical billers to do not need a college degree to get a job, they do need extensive training and in some cases certification to get proper training. The better the training, the better the position and the more job security they will have.

Medical billing is not what it used to be. Positions in medical billing used to consist of extensive hours filling out medical forms and insurance company forms in order to insure that the doctors and medical professionals would get paid properly for the services they provided to their patients. Now in the age of technology, paper claim forms and insurance forms are a thing of the past. Insurance billing software is the way most health care professionals do their insurance claims. The only paper that is needed to properly file a claim with an insurance company is the paper chart that the doctor has on each of his patients.

After the doctor sees his patient and the chart is handed over to the medical biller, insurance billing software helps to properly submit medical forms to the patient's insurance company. When a physician chooses to purchase medical billing software they essentially help their office become more efficient in their procedures.

Once a medical biller is provided with software to assist them in submitting their claims they are essentially becoming more efficient. The software provides all the necessary claim forms to all of the major insurance companies. The forms are then filled out using the information that is provided about the patient from their file and then they are submitted virtually.

Because of medical billing software, you will find that physician's offices do not necessarily employ their own medical billers and coders, though some still do. Now with the Internet and with all of the insurance billing software out there many companies have been born that do medical billing and coding only. Therefore, doctors' offices have accounts with these medical billing services and submit their information and the company does the insurance billing for them.

There are pros and cons to hiring a service to do your billing. Though it is fast and you hand over your daily patient records and the billing is done for you, when you have a problem or if a patient of yours has a problem, it is not rectified immediately. The papers are out of your hand and you now have to go through a third party.
