When applying for caravan cover you may wish to check out any caravan insurance policy you are considering very carefully. Providers offer many benefits to the caravan owner but of course, owners have to make certain provisions to ensure their caravan is maintained and secure.

The benefits found in the typical policy

When taking out insurance the policy the typical benefits may include cover if:

  • someone breaks into your caravan and steals your belongings. The policy usually covers any furniture in the caravan and may include cash and your personal belongings. You may be able to insure your contents as new for old, which means if they are destroyed, damaged or stolen, you get brand new replacements. However always check the small print to find out what exclusions there may be. Of course, adequate security measures must be in place and there must be signs of forceful entry and exit when claiming for theft.
  • your awnings or steps are damaged. However, bear in mind that there may be criteria that has to be met in order to be covered. Usually the insurance provider asks that you state a limit of insurance for your awning on the policy separately. Your awning is also typically only covered from damage due to a storm if you are in the caravan at the time of damage. For instance if you leave your awning up whilst away from it and the awning suffers damage or is destroyed, you may not be able to make a claim.
  • your caravan is stolen. This may relate to owners of touring caravans, as they are often easy targets for thieves to unhitch from your car. Security measures typically required by an insurer in order to provide you with caravan insurance may be a hitchlock on your caravan when you are towing it and leave it unattended; and a hitchlock and wheel clamp when your caravan is detached.
  • you own a static caravan, the policy may extend to the patio, decking and fencing around your caravan. However always check in the terms and conditions of the caravan insurance policy to find out what if any limitations and exclusions apply.
