Medicare Supplement Insurance is also known as Medigap because it helps fill the gaps in costs Original Medicare. These policies can help pay for some of the health care costs that are not covered (like coinsurance, copayments and deductibles).
It is also possible for a Medicare Supplement plan to cover certain things that Original Medicare does not cover. If you buy a Medicare Supplement plan, depending on the plan, you may be able to get up to 100% coverage for for Medicare-approved amounts for your health care.
Keep in mind that Medicare Supplements are sold by private insurance companies. Medigap is not Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan. It's different because a Medicare Supplement plan is not a way to get Medicare benefits. These policies are designed to help fill the gaps in Original Medicare.
Insurance companies that sell Medicare Supplement insurance policies are only able to sell "standardized" policies. These standardized policies are represented by letters (e.g. Plan A, Plan F, Plan L, etc). These letters currently run from Plan A to Plan L except in Massachusetts, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
All Medicare Supplement policies must offer the same basic benefits regardless of which insurance company sells the plan. Normally, the only difference between Medigap policies with the same letter is that they may vary in cost from one company to the next. Insurance companies offering these plans must follow federal and state laws.
Supplement policies may only cover one single person. If a couple would like to get a policy, each individual would have to buy a separate Medicare Supplement policy.
Medigap policies can help you manage our your out-of-pocket costs. You'll have the freedom to choose any doctor that accepts Medicare with virtually no claim forms to file. The benefits can be used anywhere in the USA. If you decide to move, your coverage goes with you. Foreign travel is even covered for emergency services with some plans. Check with your local agent for details.
The policies are guaranteed renewable. The plan automatically renews or is guaranteed to continue from year to year as long as your premiums are paid with they're due.
You have a "30-day free look" evaluation period when buy your policy. You can get a full refund of premiums paid less any claims paid (if any) if you return your policy within 30 days of policy issuance.
For some Medigap health plans there exists the possibility of value added services such as pharmacy savings, vision discounts or gym memberships.
