* Never leave luggage unattended! Not only can your luggage be stolen but it could also be tampered with without your knowledge.

* No one wants to spend their holidays in hospital so remember to get any necessary vaccinations before you depart.

* When staying in hotels (even fancy ones), place all your valuables in the main safe deposit box.

* Only carry limited amounts of traveller's cheques and cash with you each day.

* Visas - organise necessary visa before you leave.

* Credit Cards - check your credit card expiry dates and limits.

* Vaccinations - visit your doctor prior to departure regarding any vaccinations or other precautions that may be recommended.

* Travel documents - make at least two copies of your important travel documents e.g. passport, visas, itinerary, travel insurance policy, traveller's cheques and tickets.

* Check your luggage as soon as you arrive at your destination. If you suspect your luggage has been damaged or tampered with, report it immediately to the airline and airport officials.

* Buy travel insurance!

When selecting travel insurance make sure it includes at least the following items that are insured:

  • overseas medical and dental expenses (for international insurance)
  • resumption of overseas journey (international insurance)
  • replacement of luggage and documents
  • cover for accidental death, disability and loss of income
